Outdoor Adventures
Besides heading to your favorite beach or shopping outlet, why not consider visiting some of the popular outdoor attractions Sarasota has to offer? If you'd like to spend time with many of the creatures that live among us in their natural habitat, we suggest visiting the Myakka River State Park. One of Florida's oldest and largest state parks at 57 square miles, The Myakka River State Park is a prime location to hike, fish, camp and observe wildlife. When it comes to observing the vast foliage and vegetation in the region, the place to visit is the delightful Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. The nearly 10 acre bayfront facility boasts more than 20,000 plants from around the world and all sorts of interesting scientific exhibitions. Not too far from the Selby Gardens is the Sarasota Garden Club, that also hosts a nice assortment of flora for your enjoyment. A butterfly, tropical hubiscus and bromeliad garden are all the on premesis of the Garden Club, located just off the Boulevard of the Arts. Putting gardens and wildlife together, we've got the Sarasota Jungle Gardens. Since 1940, the Sarasota Jungle Gardens has offered guests a chance to see many unique animals on their lush 10-acre tropical grounds. You can even meet and feed their American Flamingos which freely roam the gardens. Sarasota's beautiful beaches are of course another great way to spend quality time outdoors. About 65 miles north of Sarasota, over 2,000 animals from all corners of the globe can be seen at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo. Child Magazine has ranked the Lowry Park Zoo as the number-one family-friendly zoo in the United States. Although the facility is partially indoors, the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium made our list, because of all the amazing aquatic adventures to be had there. Roughly 400,000 visitors come to this private, nonprofit marine research laboratory and aquarium every year. Make
sure to head out to as
many of these outdoor attractions as possible while you're here.
You'll find them to be quite enjoyable and educational!
Regardless of the time of year, make sure to wear plenty of sunscreen while you're outside. The Florida sun is intense whether it has clouds in front of it or not, so please err on the side of caution and use an SPF of at least 15 to block out those harmful rays.
